We were asked to analyze a blog post or news article relating to video and come up with several focus group questions to help prepare us for Proximity’s spring survey. Below is my summary of a ReelSEO article on YouTube movie rentals. I suggest we include questions in the spring survey to help us conclude whether or not Gen-Y would buy movie rentals from YouTube.
What YouTube movie rental provides
YouTube is a website where users can upload and share video clips. According to Christopher Rick on ReelSEO, YouTube recently announced that they would be testing a video rental service through their site. By using Google Checkout, a registered user can pay $3.99 to rent a video and watch it online through YouTube.
Importance of YouTube movie rental service
YouTube movie rentals contribute to the change in how Gen-Y watches movies-- online. With the YouTube movie rental service, there is no monthly plan to sign up for; just chose a movie from their list, pay for it, and watch it on the computer.
If YouTube decides to continue with the movie rental service, they will be competing with sites like Surf the Channel as well as taking business away from companies such as Netflix, which provides online video streaming and rentals by mail.
According to Christopher Rick, it will take a lot of advertisement money and placements to fuel something like this.
Questions to ask for Proximity’s survey
We need to find out what sites Gen-Y goes to when they want to watch streaming video and if they would use the video rental service from YouTube. We should ask some of the following questions:
-What top three online video streaming sites do you currently use and why?
-How much do you normally pay to watch videos offline and/or online?
